How to fix your phone/iPhone has connected to Wi-Fi but no internet?

Compare to a phone not connect to wifi, it's frustrating when your phone shows connected to Wi-Fi but you have no internet access. Fear not! This guide will walk you through a series of troubleshooting steps to get you back online.

Basic Checks:


  • Is it an Outage? Check if your internet service provider (ISP) is experiencing an outage. You can visit their website or social media pages for updates.
  • Restart Your Router and Phone: A simple restart can often resolve temporary glitches. Power off your router and modem (if separate units) for 30 seconds, then turn them back on. Restart your phone as well.



Wi-Fi Network Issues:


  • Forget and Reconnect: Sometimes, a corrupted connection can cause problems. Go to your Wi-Fi settings, tap on the connected network, and choose "Forget network" or similar option. Then, search for the network again and enter the password to reconnect.
  • Check for Conflicting IP Addresses: If multiple devices have static IP addresses assigned, they might conflict. Try setting your phone's IP address to DHCP (dynamic) in the Wi-Fi network settings. This allows your router to assign a unique address automatically.
  • Verify Wi-Fi Band: Some routers offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. While 5 GHz offers faster speeds, it has shorter range. Try connecting to the other band (if available) to see if it resolves the issue.



Advanced Troubleshooting:


  • Set Static IP (if comfortable): If DHCP doesn't work, consider assigning a static IP address to your phone. This might require consulting your router's manual or contacting your ISP for guidance, as it involves setting specific IP address, subnet mask, and gateway details.
  • Change DNS Servers: DNS (Domain Name System) translates website names to IP addresses. Try using public DNS servers like Google's (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) in your phone's Wi-Fi settings.
  • Check Date and Time: An incorrect date and time can disrupt internet connectivity on your phone. Ensure they are set to automatic or match your current location.
  • Reset Network Settings (Last Resort): This will erase all your Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections. Use this option only if nothing else works. Back up important data beforehand. Navigate to your phone's settings and search for "reset network settings" or similar option.


Additional Tips:

  • Update Software: Ensure your phone and router have the latest software updates installed, as they might contain bug fixes related to Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Identify the Culprit: If other devices on the same Wi-Fi network have internet access, the problem likely lies with your phone. If no devices have internet, the issue is most likely with your router or ISP.
