Welcome to Blackview (Well-known brand and manufacturer of rugged smartphone) blog. Hope the guide helps.

When an app icon suddenly disappears from your phone’s home screen, it does not necessarily mean that the app has been deleted. In many cases, the application is still installed but has been removed from the home screen, moved to another page or folder, hidden by a setting, or placed in the app library. Fortunately, both Android phones and iPhones provide several ways to locate a missing application and restore its icon. The exact steps can vary slightly depending on your phone model and software version, but the basic process is straightforward.

A phone show some lost apps

Before reinstalling an application, it is worth checking whether it is already installed. Reinstalling unnecessarily can waste time and may create confusion about your existing app data or account. Start by searching for the application by name, then check whether it appears in your phone’s app drawer, App Library, hidden apps section, or device settings. Once you locate it, you can usually add the icon back to the home screen in just a few taps. The following sections explain the most reliable methods for Android phones and iPhones.

How to find a missing app icon on Android

Android devices from Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, Motorola, OnePlus, and other manufacturers may organize applications differently, but most Android phones have an app drawer containing all installed applications. If an icon disappears from the home screen, the first place to look is the app drawer rather than the Google Play Store.

1. Search the app drawer

The quickest solution is to open the app drawer and search for the missing application. Depending on your Android launcher, you can usually swipe up from the bottom of the home screen to see all installed apps.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the home screen to open the app drawer.
  • Use the search box at the top and enter the name of the missing app.
  • When the app appears, touch and hold its icon.
  • Drag the icon toward the home screen, or select an option such as “Add to Home.”
  • Release the icon in the desired location.

If the application appears in the app drawer, it is installed on the phone. Therefore, there is normally no need to download it again. You only need to restore its shortcut to the home screen.

2. Check whether the app has been hidden

Some Android launchers allow users to hide applications. This feature can be useful for keeping private or rarely used apps out of sight, but it can also make an application appear to have disappeared.

  • Open the phone’s Settings app.
  • Look for Home screen, Apps, or Home screen settings.
  • Find an option related to “Hide apps,” “Hidden apps,” or similar wording.
  • Check the list of hidden applications.
  • If the missing app is listed, remove it from the hidden-app list.
  • Return to the home screen and add the application icon again if necessary.

The location of this setting depends heavily on the manufacturer. Samsung phones, for example, may place the option inside Home screen settings, while other Android devices may use different terminology.

3. Check folders and additional home-screen pages

Sometimes an icon has not disappeared at all; it has simply been moved accidentally. Check every home-screen page by swiping left and right. Also open folders such as “Tools,” “Utilities,” “Social,” or “Google,” because the missing app may have been placed inside one of them.

  • Swipe through all home-screen pages.
  • Open every relevant folder and look for the application.
  • If you find it, touch and hold the icon.
  • Drag it outside the folder if you want it directly on the home screen.
  • Place it in your preferred position and release it.

4. Confirm that the application is still installed

If you cannot find the application in the app drawer, check your installed applications through Settings or Google Play. Search for the app by name. If the store shows “Open” rather than “Install,” the application is already installed. You can open it from there and then restore its home-screen shortcut using your launcher’s options.

If the store shows “Install,” however, the application may have been uninstalled. In that situation, reinstall it and wait for the installation to complete before looking for the new icon in the app drawer.

How to find a missing app icon on iPhone

On an iPhone, an application can remain installed even when its icon is no longer visible on the normal home screen. This is particularly common when an app has been moved to the App Library or when an entire home-screen page has been hidden. The App Library is therefore the first place to check.

1. Search the App Library

Swipe left past all of your home-screen pages until you reach the App Library. It automatically organizes installed applications into categories and also provides a search function.

  • Swipe left through your home-screen pages until the App Library appears.
  • Tap the search field or swipe down within the App Library.
  • Type the name of the missing application.
  • Touch and hold the app icon when it appears.
  • Select “Add to Home Screen” if that option is available.

If “Add to Home Screen” is not shown, the app may already have a shortcut somewhere on your home screen. You can also touch and hold the icon and drag it toward the left edge to move it onto a home-screen page.

2. Check hidden home-screen pages

iPhone allows entire home-screen pages to be hidden without deleting the applications located on those pages. This can make several app icons appear to disappear simultaneously.

  • Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen until the icons begin to jiggle.
  • Tap the page indicator near the bottom of the screen.
  • Look for home-screen pages that are unchecked.
  • Tap the circle beneath a hidden page to make it visible again.
  • Tap “Done” to save the change.

After the hidden page becomes visible, check whether the missing application is located there. You can then move the icon to another page or position it where you normally keep it.

3. Check whether the app was removed from the home screen

When an iPhone app is removed from the home screen, the application itself can remain installed in the App Library. This is different from deleting the application. Locate it in the App Library, touch and hold the icon, and choose the option to add it back to the home screen when available.

4. Check iPhone settings and the App Store

If you cannot locate the app through the App Library, use the iPhone’s Settings or App Store to determine whether it is installed. Search for the application by name. If the App Store offers an “Open” button, the app is already installed. If it offers a download button, the app has likely been removed and needs to be installed again.

What to do if the app still cannot be found

If the normal methods do not work, restart the phone and search again. A temporary launcher or system glitch can sometimes prevent an icon from appearing correctly. You should also check whether the application has been restricted by parental controls, screen-time settings, enterprise management, or another device-management feature.

  • Restart the phone and search for the application again.
  • Check the app drawer on Android or App Library on iPhone.
  • Check hidden apps and hidden home-screen pages.
  • Search the installed-app list or App Store/Google Play.
  • Confirm whether the app has actually been uninstalled.
  • Reinstall the application only when the phone confirms that it is no longer installed.

How to prevent app icons from disappearing again

Once you restore the missing icon, consider keeping frequently used applications on a dedicated home-screen page or in a clearly labeled folder. Avoid accidentally moving icons while rearranging the home screen, and periodically check whether unused apps have been removed or hidden. On iPhone, remember that removing an icon from the home screen does not necessarily delete the application. On Android, remember that the app drawer and home screen serve different purposes: an application can remain installed in the app drawer even when its shortcut is absent from the home screen.

In most cases, a missing app icon is not a serious problem. On Android, begin by checking the app drawer, hidden-app settings, folders, and additional home-screen pages. On iPhone, check the App Library and hidden home-screen pages first. These steps can usually restore the shortcut without deleting the application or its data.

Only reinstall the application after confirming that it is no longer installed. By distinguishing between a missing shortcut, a hidden application, and a completely uninstalled app, you can restore the correct icon quickly and avoid unnecessary downloads or changes to your phone.
