IP68 vs 5ATM

What's the difference between IP68 and 5ATM waterproof rating? And who is better? Today, let's learn about it. IP68 and 5ATM are both standards used to measure the water resistance of electronic devices, particularly smartphones and smartwatches. However, they differ in their approach to measuring water resistance.

IP68

IP68 is a standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that measures the degree of protection provided by an enclosure against the ingress of solid objects, dust, and water. The first digit (6) indicates the level of protection against dust and the second digit (8) indicates the level of protection against water. The bigger the digit is, the stronger proof grade is. A device with an IP68 rating is considered dust-tight and can withstand immersion in water up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes. Therefore, the rugged IP68 phones gained deep favor from outdoor lovers.

5ATM

5ATM, on the other hand, is a standard used by watch manufacturers to indicate the level of water resistance of their watches. Note, it's dedicated to watches, not for phones and more. 5ATM stands for "5 atmospheres" or "5 bar," which means that a watch with a 5ATM rating can withstand pressure equivalent to being submerged in water up to 50 meters deep. However, it does not necessarily mean that the watch can be used for diving or swimming at such depths. It also depends on other factors such as watch structure design, sealed design and more.

The IP68 waterproof rating can be used into the smartphone, rugged tablet, and smartwatch and more, but 5ATM waterproof rating is just used in a watch. You can say you want to buy a 5ATM smartwatch, but you can't say you want to buy a 5ATM waterproof phone. In terms of which one is better, it depends on your needs and usage.

If you plan to use your electronic device primarily for everyday activities like showering or washing dishes, an IP68 rating should suffice. However, if you plan to use your device for swimming or water sports, a 5ATM rating may be more appropriate. If you are looking for a budget diving smartwatch, the Blackview R1 is worth hands on.
