2021-12-27 1754 3

With so many types of USB connectors available in the market nowadays, if you've ever needed to charge anything, from smartphones to tablets, to cameras and even laptops or other tech gadgets, you’ve likely needed to use one. But, how can you know which cable is what you need, especially when shopping online for one? Here, Blackview is ready to help with a quick guide to the USB standards.

Types of USB Connectors

USB Type-A

USB Type-A is the most common USB port that you’ll find on computers, PCs, power banks, and chargers. It’s easily recognizable with the rectangular shape. Looking inside, you’ll see that half is with a plastic rectangle to ensure good contact with the four connectors while the other half is empty, showing that USB-A cables will only go into the port one way. Generally, you can usually tell which way up they should be by the USB symbol printed on the top.

USB Type-B

Also known as the USB standard B connector, the USB Type-B cable, with a square shape with beveled exterior corners on top ends, is not as common as the other types of USB cables. It’s mainly for USB peripherals such as a printer, scanners, external hard drives, or other larger peripheral devices. Though still in use today, the USB Type-B cable is phasing out.

Mini-USB

The mini USB was the standard a while back, mainly for various older devices, including portable game consoles, MP3 players, digital cameras, and mobile phones. However, the micro-USB connectors quickly took its place. It’s roughly in the shape of an anvil and has a 5-pin connector. As for the size, it’s smaller than the regular USB Type-A or Type-B cables but bigger when compared to the Micro-USB.

Micro-USB

Up until recently, the Micro-USB cable was still popular. It looks like a tiny and squashed version of Mini-USB, with a longer bottom edge, angled sides, and a shorter top edge. This connector is in favor of most manufacturers for budget smartphones and tablets. You might also find micro-USB ports on certain accessories like Bluetooth speakers, wireless earphones, smartwatch charging stands, and more as well.

USB-C (USB Type-C)

The USB-C, also known as USB Type-C, is the latest connector with widespread support from major tech companies and will gradually replace the previous USB cables. You will find the USB-C port on most new devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets. The game-changer edges of USB-C include a higher power flow, faster data transfer rate, and a reversible design that facilitate plugging.
