Microsoft begins shipping Windows 11 23H2 to OEMs
Microsoft has taken a significant step towards the anticipated launch of Windows 11 23H2 by releasing the build (22631.2428) to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), allowing them to ensure compatibility with their devices. This release, known as an "enablement package," activates features already present in the operating system but not yet enabled. In addition to the existing Windows 11 Moment 4 features, the update brings further enhancements.
Although not considered a major release, Windows 11 23H2 holds significance as it is believed to be the final major update before the introduction of Windows 12. The exact release date for Windows 11 23H2 has not been officially announced, but industry experts expect the feature update to start rolling out to the public very soon.
According to information obtained by Windows Latest, Microsoft made the Windows 11 23H2 ("Windows 11 2023 Update") available for download to OEMs on October 23. This marks a crucial milestone in the preparation for the final rollout to consumers. During this phase, OEMs can thoroughly test the update's compatibility with their applications and drivers.
It is worth noting that the update does not bring any hardware or software changes. Apps and drivers that are already compatible with Windows 11 version 22H2 will continue to work seamlessly. The OEM release also allows manufacturers to prepare new devices equipped with the latest Windows 11 update.
Windows 11 23H2 is listed as an "enablement package" on the OEMs portal. This package serves as a switch to activate new features that are part of the operating system but not yet activated. Users who install Windows 11 23H2 without having previously installed the Windows 11 Moment 4 update will gain access to features like Windows Copilot and ungrouping for the taskbar. Additionally, they can expect improvements to the notification center, a new System Components Page, and minor bug fixes.
Notable features included in Windows 11 23H2 are:
- Windows Ink Anywhere (also available for Windows 11 22H2 with KB5031455)
- A new Settings Components page to manage codecs, extensions, apps, and other Microsoft-installed services (also heading to Windows 11 22H2)
- Renaming of the Xbox Game Bar to Game Bar (a change observed in Windows 10 as well)
- The ability to rename devices in Nearby sharing (to be added later, not included in the original release)
- Transformation of the Taskbar's Teams Chat into Microsoft Teams (free)
While Windows 11 23H2 may not bring sweeping changes, it holds importance as the presumed final major update before the highly anticipated Windows 12 rollout.
As the release date draws closer, users can expect Microsoft to provide further information on the availability of Windows 11 23H2 to the general public. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development.
